A Letter regarding STRETCH Academy 2016-2017
Dear NBFA Families:
New Beginnings Family Academy, in partnership with BOYS, Inc. (Bridgeport Organization for Youth Sports), will provide an onsite, STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) enrichment and recreation program. Beginning, Monday, September 26, 2016, the program will run from 2:00 p.m. - 4:50 p.m. Monday-Friday, except half days, at NBFA. There will be no cost to families.
STRETCH Academy in partnership with BOYS, Inc. will offer students in grades 1 - 6:
- Social emotional learning based on NBFA’s STRETCH principles (self-controlled, thoughtful, responsible, empathetic, tenacious, *collaborative, hardworking)
- Project-based learning where students acquire skills by building, creating, investigating, analyzing, designing and engineering
- Health and wellness element that connects science, physics, engineering and technology to sports applications.
As in years past, STRETCH Academy will begin three weeks after the new academic year, on Monday, September 26, 2016 and will end on Friday, June 2, 2017. This is largely due to limited grant funding, but also ensures a smooth start to the new academic year. NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO AFTERSCHOOL FROM SEPTEMBER 6 – SEPTEMBER 23. ALL CHILDREN WILL BE DISMISSED PROMPTLY AT 1:50 P.M., the end of NBFA’s regular school day. Again, as in years past, families will need to make short-term arrangements for their children’s after school care during the first few weeks of school.
Please note that NBFA is unable to accept new STRETCH applications from returning families at this time, as the application deadline for returning families closed in May. A limited number of slots are currently available for new students only.
After school busing will be provided at 4:50 p.m. this year. However, due to high transportation costs, the after school bus will be discontinued after 2016-2017.
Thank you for your patience while NBFA worked diligently to develop a partnership with BOYS, Inc. that promises to be meaningful to our learners and helpful to our families.
