I have been teaching at New Beginnings Family Academy since 2006. I am a lifetime Connecticut Resident.  I grew up in Newtown and now live in Waterbury, CT with my family.  I earned my Bachelors of Science in Human Services at University of Connecticut, my elementary certification through Western Connecticut State University, and a Masters in Remedial and Language Arts through the University of Bridgeport.  Throughout my time at New Beginnings I have worked in many roles, including math teacher for 3rd/4th grade, classroom teacher for Kindergarten, 2nd and 3rd, and Reading interventionist K-8.
It is the goal of our literacy team to provide reading intervention to any student needing explicit instruction and support in one or more areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.  Our school offers a variety of research-based intervention programs and approaches. Students participation in intervention is based on individual needs to master specific literacy skills to become successful readers.

Dav Pilkey Virtual Drawing Class

“Captain Underpants” Writer/Illustrator Dav Pilkey Will Host Virtual Drawing Classes, Readings, and More

Dear NBFA Families,

I hope you are all staying healthy and safe and making the most of this time at home.  All of our everyday lives and routines have been impacted and there has been a big shift in our "normal".  Everyone is trying to figure out how to make this all work.  Please know that you have a team of people to support you as you navigate this world of homeschooling while juggling family and work.  I am here to support you!  I miss my students, families and colleagues all very much and hope to connect with you all soon!

As of right now, schools will be closed until at least April 20th.  Please encourage your children to read everyday and complete the supplemental work sent home.  Over the next few weeks, I will be posting information on distance learning and reading support.  I will share read-aloud books, resources and activities. There are also several links to games, digital libraries, articles and other resources that you can find by clicking the links to the right (Students, Parents, Teachers) .

Please feel free to reach out to me anytime! I'd love to hear from all of you!

Warm Regards,

Ms. Abbey Assunto
