New Beginnings Family Academy Closing The Achievement Gap

While Connecticut is home to the largest achievement gap in the nation, it is also home to innovative schools that are proving it can be closed. With the release of the 2007 Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) scores, Bridgeport’s New Beginnings Family Academy has proven that when it comes to catching kids up to grade level there are few schools in the state that do it better.

An analysis of the annual gains for each class reveals that, on average, the percentage of students within goal range increases 17.4 points for every year they are in the school:

• 25.8 points between 3rd (2006) and 4th (2007).

• 31.7 points between 4th (2006) and 5th (2007).

• 3.3 points between 5th (2006) and 6th (2007).

• 8.9 points between 6th (2006) and 7th (2007).

Overall, the average percentage of students within goal range on the 2007 CMT was 53.1 percent, up from 35.1 percent in 2006—one of the largest increases in the state. New Beginnings’ results for 2007 place it more than 23 points above the Bridgeport district average of 29.8 percent of students within goal range (See attached chart for full results.)

“We are absolutely thrilled with the progress our students made this year,” said Ronelle P. Swagerty, executive director of Friends of New Beginnings Family Academy. “It is a great confirmation for all the hard work this past year and a sign that we are on our way to putting all of our students on the path to college.”

New Beginnings Family Academy is a public charter school in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It opened in September 2002 to 156 students in kindergarten through third grade. It will enroll 360 students through 8th grade when classes resume next month.

New Beginnings Family Academy’s students are selected through a public lottery. Overall, 99 percent of students are African American or Hispanic and nearly 90 percent qualify for free and reduced priced meals.
