Toxic stress in a child’s life can affect their biology and eventually lead to adult disorders such as heart disease, cancer, and obesity.

Stress-inducing events can impact children on a daily basis. And they disproportionately affect low-income children in cities like Bridgeport.

New Beginnings Family Academy (NBFA), a public charter school in Bridgeport focused on emotionally responsive practices, will host a screening of the documentary RESILIENCE: THE BIOLOGY OF STRESS & THE SCIENCE OF HOPE followed by a panel discussion on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. at NBFA, 184 Garden St., Bridgeport. The film and discussion will address the toxic stresses children can experience and how a progressive education model can better equip students and families with the tools to overcome these stresses and thrive in school and beyond.

At NBFA’s core is an education that focuses on the whole-child and a vital part of that is addressing traumatic events in one’s youth also known as Adverse Childhood Events (ACE). Learn how the medical community and schools like Bridgeport's NBFA are addressing toxic stress and helping to brighten the future of our students.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Ronelle Swagerty, CEO of New Beginnings Family Academy. The panel will include Licensed Clinical Social Worker Marcel Slowly of Covenant Family Services, Kyoshi Herbie Bagwell of Bagwell Academy of Martial Arts and Mirjam Maharaj of Maharaj Real Estate. The panelists, who have overcome their own ACEs to succeed in life, will discuss their journies to help inspire NBFA students and parents.

Childcare will be provided and refreshments will be served Space is limited so be sure to reserve your seat by visiting www.facebook.com/events/230031514582943.

About New Beginnings Family Academy
New Beginnings Family Academy (NBFA) is a tuition-free public charter school for students in grades Pre-K through 8th, located in Bridgeport, CT. Our mission is to provide students with a meaningful, high-quality education through experience-based learning that helps them develop essential social, emotional and critical-thinking skills. This gives all children the necessary foundation to achieve their full potential at every stage of life. To accomplish our goal of preparing students for life-long success, we work with experts from Bank Street College of Education to implement a progressive education model with emotionally responsive practice. This model attends to the whole child, not just academics, and focuses on developing collaborative, socially responsible leaders by organically weaving ethics and character-building into daily instruction in small-class settings. Our student-focused approach brings out the best in each child by getting to know them individually, encouraging curiosity, and fostering their personal interests.
All NBFA students are selected through a blind lottery, and there is no admissions criteria.
